Race Day

It’s the day after. I’ve stopped crying and I no longer feel miserable. In-fact I’m thinking of going for a run.

Yesterday I ran a half marathon. Half. It’s not even a full one. But it was enough for me.

It’s not my first and it probably won’t be my last  due to the fact that a full marathon, at this point in my life, is just not a feasible goal. I choose to run in races – I know this, it was my choice. I even know why I choose to do this. I had 2 miserable hours yesterday during my run to try to figure it out.

I run races because it gives me a goal to work towards. I run races because I like the buzz of being with all the other runners on race day. I enjoy meeting people and chatting to random strangers, knowing we are somehow unified by the fact that we like to run. I run races because it truly makes me feel humbled to see those people who are overcoming different types of disabilities; they show me that if you want something enough then you can make it happen. I like to see the different types of runners – running truly is all inclusive – you don’t have to be of a particular build, height, age or weight to do it. I love the mutual support you give and you get when you do a race. It’s a wonderful feeling.

So, if I knew all this, what did I learn from my miserable run?

I learnt that some runs are better than others. Some days are better than others. That’s life!

I learnt that when you feel that something is too much for you, there is a voice inside you that tells you – listen to it.

I learnt that it’s okay to say “No” to things that make you feel uncomfortable.

I learnt that an experience isn’t the same for everyone. What one person looks for in a run can be different than another.

I learnt that you need to know what you want to achieve and once you do – go do it. Don’t worry about other people’s expectations of you Only ever think about your expectations of yourself. Only you know what you are truly capable of!

Finally, if you want to run with a Tiara on your head, Just Do It.

(Look closely, you’ll see it!)
